Julian Nagelsmann sacked as Bayern coach

Bayern Munich announced that manager Julian Nagelsmann has been fired, effective immediately, following the club’s poor performance in the Champions League quarterfinals and drop to second in the Bundesliga table. Nagelsmann was in his second season as coach after leading the club to its 31st Bundesliga title in his first. Former Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel will take his place.

“FC Bayern München has released head coach Julian Nagelsmann,” the German club said in a statement. “This decision was taken by CEO Oliver Kahn and board member for sport Hasan Salihamidžić in consultation with club president Herbert Hainer. Nagelsmann will be succeeded by Thomas Tuchel.” Follow OBN to get the latest in sports and more!

The 35-year-old came to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2021 after a spell at RB Leipzig. He won the German title by eight points in his first season as well as the German Supercup in 2021 and 2022. Bayern started the new campaign trailing Union Berlin before they snatched the top spot. They kept the top spot with a very little advantage for weeks.

However, a 2-1 defeat by Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday left them with just five wins from their past 10 league games, dropping them back to second and one point behind leaders Dortmund. The club also announced that assistant coaches Dino Toppmoller, Benjamin Gluck and Xaver Zembrod will join Nagelsmann in the release.

“When we signed Julian Nagelsmann for FC Bayern in the summer of 2021, we were convinced we would work with him on a long-term basis,” Bayern CEO Oliver Kahn said. “Julian shares our aspiration to play successful and attractive football. But now we have come to the conclusion that the quality in our squad – despite the Bundesliga title last year – has come to the fore less and less often.”

Nagelsmann will be replaced by Thomas Tuchel, the German coach who was fired by Premier League club Chelsea in September of last year. Tuchel’s Chelsea won the Champions League in May 2021, one of three titles won in 20 months at Stamford Bridge. Following that campaign, he was named World Coach of the Year. During his first season with the Blues, he finished third in the league table.

Tuchel will remain with Bayern until the 2024-25 season, and he will oversee team training beginning this week. Bayern’s next game, and his first as manager, is against league leaders Dortmund on April 1.
