2023 Tennis: Alex Eala bow down to German foe, exits Thailand Open

The Philippine Tennis sensation, Alex Eala suffers defeat over Tatjana Maria of Germany in the first round of Thailand Open 2023 Tennis.

The 17 year-old Filipina trailed Maria, 35, throughout the whole match with the score line of 2-6, 206. Tatja Maria is currently ranked No.70 in the world and Alex Eala is currently at the ranked no.217, so to be fair, it will be given that the Philippine bet will be having a hard time finding good looks, scores, and most importantly a win over the highly ranked and experienced player like Maria. The German bet just needed one hour and 14 minutes to dispatch her opponents and advance to the round of 16 of the Open tournament.

The veteran started a bit rusty and went down 1-2 in the first set, giving Eala a strong start and a potential win for this game. However, Maria had other plans and remained on her composure as she gradually locked down and denied the 17 year-old rising star with five straight obliteration for the dominant 6-2 set cruise.

Alex didn’t give up and also stayed on her composure, tried to challenge her opponent by another tight 1-1 scoring, but Maria had a lot of answers towards the inexperienced kid and essentially put the match away with a 5-1 lead before concluding the game with a 6-2 outing.

This is the first major Open tournament for the Philippine tennis pride, after ousting the world No.240 Kristina Dmitruk of Belarus and the Chinese veteran Han Xinyun, ranked 84 on her way to the main draw of the Thailand Open.

Despite having a short stint, the WTA No.214 expressed her happiness playing in Thailand, and represented not only the Philippines (being also the first Filipino to capture the US Open Junior title last year), but Southeast Asia in this prestigious tournament.

“It was a great experience getting through the qualies and playing the main draw in this WTA 250K Tournament. It was great to be playing back home in Southeast Asia.”
