The Australia Test Captain is known for his commitment in climate action advocacy. Alinta Energy has been Cricket Australia’s principal sponsor for the past four years, and probably will be the last year. This Tuesday he will not do a sponsorship with the energy company.

“Not for this year,” Cummins responded when asked about appearing on various ads this season.

Pat Cummins is one of Australia’s most influential sports figures, sharing his concern and voice together with other players. Cricket Australia (CA) denied that the reason for the non-renewal decision with Alinta is due to Cummins’ environmental and climate change advocacy.

“CA confirms that at no point did any conversation between men’s team captain Pat Cummins and CA CEO Nick Hockley influence Alinta’s decision to finish its sponsorship with Cricket Australia in June 2023.’

The Cricket for Climate Campaign is composed of Cummins, Steve Smith, David Warner, Mitchell Starc, Marnus Labuschagne, Rachael Haynes, and Alyssa Healy have a unifying aims to “protect the future of our game, and our planet, for generations to come by generating solar panels on arenas.”

“Sporting codes must be more proactive in seeking sponsors that meet community expectations for positive environmental and social impacts. Rather than simply opting for the highest bidder from companies with damaging social and environmental modus operandi,” Environmental Victoria CEO Jono La Nauze, a campaign spearhead on fogging CA to drop Alinta’s sponsorship.

Cummins urged Cricket Australia to lean the purpose of the sport into a more good initiative with an impact of making better lives for the people, the community, and the environment. Earlier this year, the Australian Captain organized a forum named Cricket for Climate in Sydney with the content of what cricket could contribute to reducing the carbon footprint.

“There’s a lot of good initiatives out there and passionate people, but I’d love for some of that passion to be driven into real action,” he said. “I hope that the purpose of the sport is to hopefully be a good thing for society and who we partner with, what decisions we make I hope are in the best interests of not only the sport but our society,” Cummins said in a local news outlet.
