Wolves sign Diego Costa on free transfer

Former Chelsea striker Diego Costa has marked his return to the English top-flight after completing a move to Wolverhampton Wanderers on a free transfer until the end of the 2022-23 season, the Premier League club announced. The 33-year-old had been without a club since January, having left Brazil’s Atletico Mineiro by mutual consent. Read more live soccer TV and fixtures here!

“Wolves have secured the signing of experienced international striker Diego Costa on a deal until the end of the 2022/23 season,” Wolverhampton said in a statement. Costa won the Premier League twice with Chelsea and spent three-and-a-half years at Atletico Madrid since leaving Stamford Bridge in 2017. He scored 24 goals in exactly 100 appearances for Atletico before returning to native soccer team in Brazil in 2020.

“It’s a first-class club with very good players who know how to play football and having the chance to play in the Premier League again was the main thing,” Costa said. “It wasn’t in the best terms possible on accounts of a player’s injury which, unfortunately, I can only wish him nothing but the best for him.” Bruno Lage is currently short at striker after Sasa Kalajdzic and Raul Jimenez both sidelined due to injury.

The Brazilian, who is closing in on 500 career appearances, won the league and cup double for Atletico Mineiro. Despite being born in Brazil, he represented Spain at international level after spending most of his time in the Spanish capital. He scored 10 goals in 24 games, including three at the 2018 World Cup – the last time he played international football.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Diego Costa to Wolves, and back to the Premier League,” Wolves chairman Jeff Shi added. “A serial winner with a wealth of experience at the highest level, Diego will bring something unique to our dressing room and on the pitch, and we look forward to his impact at Molineux and Compton this season.”

Wolves currently sit 14th in the table after only registering one win in six games so far this season. Last week, Daniel Podence scored a close-range finish to help Wolves secure their first Premier League win of the season, beating Southampton 1-0. This victory helped them jump out of the relegation zone with six points, while Southampton fell into it.
