UEFA to add MLS soccer teams in Super Cup event

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is reportedly set to make significant changes in one of their premier events, the UEFA Super Cup, with the Major League Soccer (MLS soccer teams) champions to take part in the revamped competition as the “host” team. The new format is expected to be launched from the 2024 edition of the competition.

The current format of the said event features the winners of Champions League and Europa League champions. In the proposed new format, the Super Cup is likely to become a four-team  competition that will include UEFA’s newly launched competition – the UEFA Conference League and the USA’s top flight winner. Reports claim that the UEFA have been considering options on how they will execute the new format, with the likes of “placing the matches within a weekend festival” or “having pop acts perform” during halftime were being discussed. UEFA has recently been attracting traction from the football fans in the United States that gave them the idea to expand their reach outside Europe.

Under the new format, the event is set to be more competitive. With the amount of popularity that MLS has been receiving in recent years, with European stars like Gareth Bale are making a mark in the competition, there is no doubt that UEFA targets them as a new partner. It is learnt that further discussions are set to take place at the European Club Association’s General Assembly in Istanbul.

In August, Champions League winners Real Madrid beat Europa League holders Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 to clinch the UEFA Super Cup for a record-equaling fifth time. Goals from David Alaba and Karim Benzema helped Real kicked-off their season with a trophy. Madrid now equaled AC Milan and Barcelona for most Super Cup wins at five.

The Lost Blancos, who beat Liverpool 1-0 in last season’s Champions League, has become the ninth Champions League team to win the competition in the past decade, with only Atletico Madrid clinching the Super Cup as Europa League holders by beating Real in the 2018 edition.
