Soccer Highlights: Unai Emery returns with a win, Berlin suffers heavy defeat

In another weekend of European football action, scores and records poured as domestic league giants showed-off to make an impact before the World Cup break. Relive the games and catch soccer highlights of the most recent soccer action in Europe’s top five leagues. 

England

Manchester City escaped defeat at home as Erling Haaland rescued a 2-1 win over Fulham in stoppage-time. City remains second in the table with only a point away from the top spot as Arsenal beat London rivals Chelsea 1-0 to retake the spot. Meanwhile, former Arsenal boss Unai Emery made a statement on his return to the English top flight, handing Manchester United their second league defeat since August and leading Aston Villa to their first Premier League win against the Red Devils at Villa Park since 1995. Liverpool secured their first away win this season, with Mohamed Salah scoring a brace in the first half to beat Tottenham 1-2 at home.

Spain

Barcelona gave Gerard Pique a memorable send off at the Camp Nou, beating Almeria 2-0 to momentarily move atop the LaLiga standings. Pique, who was named captain for the match, made his final appearance until he was replaced in the 84th minute and embraced all his team-mates and coach Xavi in tears. Ousmane Dembele and Frenkie de Jong scored the second-half goals to win the game. 

Holders Real Madrid faced a different fate as they were beaten by Rayo Vallecano 3-2 in their most recent outing, ending their unbeaten run in the league. Red card flew as Sevilla settled for a draw with Real Betis in the El Gran Derbi. Three red cards were raised during the Andalucian rivals where Jesus Navas’ own goal helped the home team avoid defeat. 

Italy

Napoli came from behind to keep their unbeaten run as they beat Atalanta 1-2 to remain on top of the league table. Elif Elmas broke the equalizer to help his side move eight points clear in the Italian top flight. Elsewhere, Felipe Anderson scored the only goal of the match to win the first Rome derby of the season for Lazio 0-1 and move third of the league table. 

Another highly-anticipated derby during the weekend was the Derby D’Italia where Juventus sank Inter Milan 2-0 at Allianz Stadium. Juve moved fifth in the league table, while Inter dropped to seventh following their fifth loss this season. Olivier Giroud rescued AC Milan from dropping points as he scored the winner in the 89th minute with an acrobatic finish against Spezia 1-2. 

Germany

Bayern Munich moved top of the German league as they defeated Hertha Berlin 3-2 in an away game. Meanwhile, Union Berlin, which entered the week as the league leaders, suffered a heavy loss that dropped them third in the league table after conceding five second-half goals in a 5-0 defeat at struggling Bayer Leverkusen. 

Also at home, Borussia Dortmund beat Bochum, with Youssoufa Moukoko becoming the youngest person to reach 10 career Bundesliga goals.  The 17-year-old scored a brace in this match. Freiburg moved second in the table as they beat Cologne 2-0 at home, with Woo-yeong Jeong and Michael Gregoritsch scoring in the second half.  

France

Danilo Pereira headed a late winner to help Paris Saint-Germain won 2-1 against fourth-placed Lorient and extend their lead on first place in Ligue 1. The win restored their five-point lead over second place Lens, who beat Angers 1-2 away from home. Marseille ended a four-match winless streak in the league with a 1-0 victory over Lyon, thanks to Samuel Gigot’s goal.

Rennes moved to third despite a 1-1 draw at Lille, while Nice extended their unbeaten run in all competitions to six games with a 1-0 win against struggling Brest. In the danger zone, Ajaccio beat Strasbourg 4-2 at home to move just a point away from relegation. Monaco traveled to Toulouse to drop them in the mid-table following the 0-2 defeat.
