Neymar to miss rest of the season due to injury

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward Neymar Jr will miss the remainder of the season after having surgery on his ankle ligaments, the Ligue 1 side has announced. In a 4-3 victory over Lille in Ligue 1, the Brazilian international was stretchered off due to an injury. The season is scheduled to end on June 3.

“Neymar Jr has sustained a number of instances of instability in his right ankle in recent years. Following his latest sprain on 20 February, the Paris Saint-Germain medical staff recommended a ligament repair operation to avoid a major risk of recurrence. All the experts consulted have confirmed this necessity,” PSG said in a statement. Follow onlinebetnow to get more sports updates!

This season, Neymar has scored 18 goals across all competitions for his club, three of which came after his return from the Qatar 2022 World Cup, where he also suffered an ankle injury during his nation’s 2-0 victory over Serbia. He was able to return in the competition. In a social media post, Neymar vowed to make a return. “I’ll come back stronger,” he wrote with a praying hands emoji.

In total, the 31-year-old suffered few injuries in the past. These injuries have been a regular concern for his French side since he signed from Barcelona for a world-record fee of $264m in 2017. Neymar sustained metatarsal fractures before PSG’s last-16 tie against Real Madrid in 2019 and against Manchester United the following year. PSG knocked out of the Champions League on both occasions.

Neymar was injured again in 2021, this time in his left adductor, and was out when PSG faced Barcelona. He has scored 118 goals in 173 games for PSG. The French champions will also be without Presnel Kimpembe against Bayern, with the France centre-back also set to miss the rest of the season due to an achilles injury.

PSG currently sit top of the Ligue 1 table, with an eight-point lead over second-placed Olympique de Marseille. They are set to play against Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week, hoping to win the game as they were beaten in the first matchup with the German champions.
