Lukaku to come back from injury, says “no plans” to return to Chelsea
Inter’s Romelu Lukaku is reportedly set to make a return from injury as he is deemed fit for Inter’s Serie A clash against AS Roma after the international break. Midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu is also likely to be back in action. According to Italian news outlets, the Inter duo are undergoing personalized training programs to recover from their injuries. The 29-year-old only managed to make three appearances so far, scoring one – a superb goal two-minutes into his return to Inter to help them seal an opening-day win. Since then, he was sidelined after suffering from muscle injury. Simone Inzaghi’s side lost three of their opening seven Serie A games, leaving Inter in seventh place, five points behind leaders Napoli.
Reports also claim that Lukaku “has no plans” and “no intention” and “no any other synonym for ever coming back to Chelsea”. Lukaku’s Blues contract is until 2026, and his Inter’s loan contract only lasts until the end of this season. However, it can be extended if the player and the two clubs agree with the terms. In June, Lukaku completed his return to Inter Milan on season-loan from Chelsea. The Belgium international scored only 8 goals in 26 matches during his second spell at Stamford Bridge after signing a club-record £97.5 million ($135 million) that also made him football’s second most expensive player in cumulative transfer fees. He struggled in his return with the club and the then manager Thomas Tuchel.
Last month, Chelsea sacked Tuchel following the team’s loss to Dinamo Zagreb 1-0 in the Champions League opener. The German left the team after just six matches into the Premier League season. Tuchel also failed on bringing the best out of their record-signing and now on-loan Romelu Lukaku, as well Timo Werner, who also left the club to make a return in his Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.
Lukaku scored a total of 64 goals in 95 games with Inter, helping them to lift their first Serie A title in 11 years in the 2020-21 season. Without their star striker, Inter finished second in Serie A last season. Lukaku is also the all-time top scorer for the national team with 68 goals, helping Belgium win bronze at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and finish on top of Group D to book their spot for this year’s event.
