Following the unfinished business in the 2018 World Cup, Football Association showed its interest to extend Gareth Southgate’s contract as England manager.
According to Martin Glenn, FA chief executive, they believe that the organization can persuade Southgate to stay for the national team as his contract set to expire in 2020. (Check 12BET for the best Soccer Betting Tips)
Recently, the 47-year-old boss guided the Three Lions to a World Cup semifinal in Russia and the FA is surely keen to extend the deal until the 2022 World Cup in Qatar as a reward of their success.
However, the governing body also stated that they cannot compete with the Premier League club in terms of pay.
Moving forward, the negotiation will most likely begin next week when Southgate returns from his vacation.
Right now, the main goal and objective is to become one of the top four countries in the world. (Sign Up for more updated sports news and events)
“We’d like him to stay beyond 2020 and I think he would like that too but we haven’t spoken about it in any depth because that would be a contract discussion and he’s on holiday now so we’ll talk about that when he gets back. It’s our job to make it competitive to make sure him and all of our people are competitively rewarded. We can never compete with a Premier League club in terms of pay. He loved the World Cup and he’s built his own belief that we can go further and that motivates him and [assistant manager] Steve Holland. One of the most powerful things he said after our defeat to Croatia was we haven’t done the job.” Glenn said in a statement
The England boss reportedly signed up to £2 million per year as he previously managed Middlesbrough and the national team under-21.
