From allies to bitter rivals, this (unlikely) scenario is about to be witnessed in this year’s Australian Open as Julia Gorges and Karolina Pliskova go against each other. And what could be a better match than see these two in a spectacular display of skills, creativity and strength just to gain the upper-hand.
Prior to their awaited match up, the two just dominated their doubles match against the Chia-Jung Chuang and Olga Govortsova’s pair 6-7, 4-6. Now that they will be facing each other, one could just imagine the preparation that they have to go through considering the fact that they seem to know each other’s techniques and styles well.
Pliskova’s rise to the top took place last year when she caused an upset against the two-time Grand Slam champion, Victoria Azarenka during the first round of Brisbane International. However, her success was short-lived when he eventually lost during the 2nd round. Reaching the WTA Premier-level final at the APIA International Sydney paved way for her entry in the world top 20. In the same year, she also played during the 3rd round of the Australian Open.
On the other hand, Julia Goerges has been a regular in the Australian Open since 2009. She has been a consistent face of the tournament except that she is yet to reach the quarterfinals, except in Auckland where the then top seed, Caroline Wozniacki defeated her.
Apparently, this is going to be a tight and close match. Goerges is more experienced, but she seems to excel more in the doubles.
Pliskova on the other hand, sports a more diverse experienced after breaking in to the top 20. But she needs to make a stronger presence in the Australian Open.
Pliskova to defeat Goerges in three sets.
