Lee Zii Jia falls to Shi Yu Qi in the Denmark Open 2022 finals

The Open Denmark 2022 concluded with Lee Zii Jia suffering a devastating defeat over the unseeded China’s Shi Yu Qi in the Single Men’s finals.

Lee Zii Jia failed to add a second BWF title in his campaign this year as he suffered a hurting defeat over Shi Yu Qi. Although the former World No.1 made a comeback in this match to send the game into a deciding third set, he did not sustain it and fell to the dominance of Shi Yu Qi with the scoreline of 18-21, 21-16, 12-21. This is China’s Shi first BWF title as a World No. 44 after he received a 10-month ban over unsportsmanlike behavior within his three years campaign. He also helped Team China capture three of the remaining four titles in the Denmark Open 2022.

On the other hand, Zii Jia’s Thailand Open title which he captured last May, remains the only BWF World Title He also clinched the Asian Badminton Championship in Men’s singles title.

In the Women’s singles final, He Bingjiao upset her higher ranked co-Chinese shuttler Chen Yufei with the scoreline of 22-20, 12-21, 21-10.

The duo Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong narrowly defeated Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping in the mixed doubles finals with the score of 21-19, 20-22, 21-19.

In the post-match interview, Zii Jia accepted the defeat with grace and vowed to come back stronger in the upcoming 2022 French Open in Paris, France which starts this Tuesday (Oct 25) to Oct 30.

”At least I have tried my best today and this is the result that I had to accept. I got two more tournaments after this, and hopefully I can maintain my current performance,” he said.

On the other side, Lee’s fellow Malaysian shuttler Leong Jun Hao claimed his first world title after defeating Cheam June Wei in an all-Malaysia Final. Jun Hao had a difficult time clinching the much-needed victory, taking an hour and seven minutes and coming from behind to beat June Wei, 9-21, 22-20, 21-19 to win the Super 100 event. – Bernama

Despite missing the chance to claim his second BWF World title this year, it’s still a good campaign for the Malaysian star who is vying for a better badminton international tour campaign this year. This is also a timely boost for Lee Zii Jia who will have a journey in the French Open.

Badminton Legend Datuk Rashid Sidek saw the another redemption and rise of a Malaysian shuttler making the noise to become a part of the badminton international rivalry in Axelsen-Zii Jia. “Lee Chong Wei had held the No. 1 spot for a long time and was the No. 2 to Lin Dan of China for some time too. Now, we have another Malaysian at second spot for the first time in the singles,” said Rashid. “The point difference between the two is huge but if Zii Jia can be more consistent, there is a possibility to narrow the gap and hopefully, take over the spot one day,” he added.

Currently, Zii Jia accumulated a total of 95, 528 points, 30,078 behind Viktor Axelsen 122, 606.
