European matchday weekend – as it happened

The title races in each of these leagues are heating up as the season nears its end. There were plenty of goals and drama on the pitch during an exciting weekend of football across Europe’s top five leagues. Here are some of this week’s game highlights. Liverpool’s fine form came to an end with a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth to move out of the Premier League’s relegation zone, while Manchester City beat Crystal Palace to keep pace with Arsenal at the top. Chelsea beat Leicester 3-1 away to make it three straight wins in all competitions for the first time since October.

In Spain, Barcelona set a new defensive record in La Liga against Athletic after keeping yet another clean sheet. After 25 games this season, Xavi’s team has only conceded 8 goals, a new record in the competition since Atlético de Madrid in 1990/91 and Deportivo de La Corua in 1993/94. Holders Real Madrid dropped to sixth place after a 3-1 home win over Espanyol.

The Serie A weekend also provided us with exciting games. Roma dropped out of the Serie A Champions League places after a 4-3 home defeat to Sassuolo without coach Jose Mourinho. Earlier, Verona’s survival bid appeared hazy after a 1-1 draw with Monza left them five points behind 17th-placed Spezia and safety. Meanwhile, Fiorentina beat Cremonese 2-0 to win their fifth straight match in all competitions.

In other news, Bayern Munich extended their lead at the top of the Bundesliga table with a 5-3 victory over Augsburg in the Bavarian derby. Schalke came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga’s 100th Ruhr derby. Leipzig moved up to third place with a 3-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, while Frankfurt and Stuttgart drew 1-1, as did Hertha and Mainz.

Meanwhile, in Ligue 1, Lois Openda scored a hat-trick in Lens’ 4-0 win over Clermont Foot. He scored three goals in the first five minutes of the game, the fastest in Ligue 1 history. Lorient tied Nice on points with a 2-0 victory over Troyes, which extended its winless streak to ten games and remains in the relegation zone. Toulouse defeated bottom-placed Angers 2-0 to snap a three-game losing streak.
