European football: Real Madrid wins El Clasico, Napoli still on top

England

Mohamed Salah scored the only goal of the match as Liverpool handed its rivals Manchester City their first defeat since the start of the season with a 1-0 victory at Anfield. However, Arsenal remained on top of the league table, extending their run to 4 straight wins and four points clear after beating Leeds 0-1 at home, with Bukayo Saka’s powerful strike in the 35th minute. 

On the opposite side of the table, Wolverhampton Wanderers ended their winless run with a 1-0 victory at home against Nottingham Forest, who earlier mocked them in an already-deleted social media. Ruben Neves scored the only goal of the game, lifting Wolves outside the danger zone. Manchester United dropped points after the goalless draw with Newcastle United. 

Spain 

Real Madrid handed Barcelona their first defeat of the season in the highly anticipated El Clasico, dropping them second and claiming top of the La Liga table with a 3-1 victory at the Bernabeu stadium. Meanwhile, Real Sociedad kept the momentum as they extended their win streak to seventh in a row in all competitions with a win against Celta Vigo, losing four of its last five games.

Sociedad level points with Real Betis, who moved to fourth place after a 3-1 win over Almería, and Atletico Madrid in the third place. Coach Jorge Sampaoli, who succeeds Julen Lopetegui, wins his first game as a returning Sevilla coach, beating Mallorca 0-1 at home. Antoine Griezmann lifted Atletico Madrid third as he scored the only goal in the match against Athletic Bilbao 1-0.

Italy

In Italy, Napoli came from behind to win against stubborn Bologna 3-2, with Victor Osimhen scoring the winner to help his side reclaim the top spot. Napoli have 10 wins in a row in all competitions and are 26 points in the lead. Reigning champions AC Milan move up to third and just a point behind leaders Napoli and Atalanta with a hard-fought 2-1 win at Verona. 

Lazio talisman Ciro Immobile went off injured in the first half in a goalless draw against Udinese. Immobile top the joint goal-scoring points. Monza ended their unbeaten run at Empoli, thanks to Nicolas Haas’ first ever Serie A goal and superb saves from Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. Sampdoria remained bottom of the league as they failed to hold Roma 0-1 at home. 

Germany

Surprise leaders Union Berlin extended their lead to four-point at the top of the Bundesliga table after Janik Haberer scored a brace in 13 minutes to earn a 2-0 home victory over Borussia Dortmund. Bayern moved second as they ended Freiburg ‘s 11-game unbeaten run in the 5-0 home victory. Bayern stayed four points behind Union .Earlier, Koln beat Augsburg 3-2 from behind with Steffen Tigges’ late goal.

Schalke extended their losing streak with a home defeat against Hoffenheim 0-3, while Bochum remained bottom of the league table after 4-1 defeat at Stuttgart. Wolfsburg settled for a 2-2 draw against visiting Gladbach, while Mainz also beat home team Werder 0-2. Also at home, RB Leipzig beat Hertha Berlin 3-2 and Frankfurt demolished Leverkusen 5-1.

France

Neymar netted a superb goal to extend Paris Saint-Germain’s unbeaten run as they beat rivals Marseille 1-0 in Ligue 1’s Le Classique. Meanwhile, former PSG boss Laurent Blanc debuted with a loss as Lyon lost at Rennes 3-2. Second-place Lorient missed the chance to level with PSG’s points and move to the top of the table after drawing with 10-man Reims 0-0 at home.

Elsewhere, Lille won at Strasbourg 0-3, while ten-men Monaco settled with a draw after Clermont’s Komnen Andric equalized the scoring late in the second half. Nice also shared spoils with Auxerre 1-1, while Toulouse continued with their good form as they beat Angers 3-2 at home. Third-place Lens quickly recovered from their loss last week with a win against Montpellier 1-0.
