Carlos Queiroz named as new Qatar coach

Qatar has chosen Carlos Queiroz, who previously coached Portugal and Iran, to guide them through the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada as he was appointed as their new coach. Queiroz represented his native Portugal in the 2010 finals before leading Iran to competitions in Brazil, Russia, and Qatar. Get the latest updates about the FIFA Club World Cup here!

“Queiroz will lead the first team with Al-Annabi’s preparations for the 2023 Gold Cup competitions next July in America, in which Al-Annabi will participate at a special invitation from CONCACAF, after he participated in the last edition 2021 that was held in the United States of America,” the Qatar Football Association (QFA) said in statement. The 69-year-old, who will soon take charge of his seventh different national team, guided the Egyptian National Team to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final and the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying final round, where they were defeated by Senegal on penalties. After resigning, he was chosen to lead Iran in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He then served as Iran’s head coach for a second time.

Iran, who finished third in Group B behind the United States and England, was also unable to move on to the round of 16. Queiroz managed La Liga powerhouse Real Madrid for a 10-month period in 2003 before returning to Manchester United as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant. At the 2010 World Cup, he also served as the coach of Portugal, which lost to eventual champion Spain in the round of 16.

In the recently concluded World Cup, host nation Qatar suffered disappointment under Felix as they lost all three of their group matches, the first FIFA World Cup host country to lose all group stages games, scoring only once. They are also the first World Cup host nation to get defeated in the opening game as Ecuador beat them 2-0.

Ranked third on the list of coaches with the most appearances in different editions of the FIFA World Cup, Queiroz will be tasked to bounce back from the national team’s humiliating World Cup result as they will take part in the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup next June as invited guests before hosting the AFC Asian Cup in January.
