After a sensational season for Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk has been crowned as the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year award for 2018/19.
The 27-year-old defender landed the prestigious award by beating Reds teammate Sadio Mane, Manchester City trio Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling, plus Chelsea’s Eden Hazard in the vote by his fellow players.
“It’s pretty difficult to put into words, but I think it’s the highest honour you can get as a player to get voted player of the year by the players you play against every week. It’s special. I’m very proud and honored to receive it.” Van Dijk stated after receiving the award
The Dutch centre-back is only the sixth defender to be recognized as the PFA Player of the Year in the awards history, echoing Norman Hunter, Colin Todd, Gary Pallister, Paul McGrath and John Terry.
There’s no doubt that Van Dijk are one of the Liverpool’s key players in the ongoing title challenge this Premier League season, playing all of the Reds league matches this season.
In fact, Van Dijk, who signed for Liverpool from Southampton in January 2018 for £75 million, vindicated his performances with the club, losing just one Premier League game so far this season to Manchester City in January.
During the campaign, Van Dijk contributed three goals so far, with two assists.
Meanwhile, Arsenal forward Vivianne Miedema also won the PFA Player of the Year award to beat Steph Houghton, Nikita Parris, Keira Walsh, Erin Cuthbert and Ji So-Yun.
The Netherlands international is the top scorer in the Women’s Super League (WSL) this season by netting 22 goals and 10 assists in her 19 appearances. In addition, Arsenal secured the WSL title with a 4-0 victory at Brighton’s Amex Stadium.
In all tournaments this season, the prolific striker has scored 39 goals already in just 46 appearances.
“I’m obviously really proud to represent my team here. We’ve had an amazing year, especially with winning the league. I’m just really happy I could help my team all season long with scoring goals and it means a lot.” Miedema stated
Meanwhile, Raheem Sterling was named PFA Young Player of the Year following his 17 goals and 10 assists in his 31 league appearances for Manchester City.
“Very proud with the PFA Young Player of the year, and truly thankful Incredible support for the whole season, let’s go for more!!!” Sterling tweeted on Twitter
