Liverpool returned to the top of the Premier League following their competitive 2-1 victory against Tottenham Hotspur, courtesy by Toby Alderweireld’s own goal at Anfield.
An astonishing 90th-minute own goal by Spurs defender Toby Alderweireld has handed Jurgen Klopp’s men the most dramatic win to keep them alive from their title race over Manchester City.
“City last year were champions and are still pretty good. We have to fight like crazy. The crowd was outstanding. They were really here to push us and at the end it helped. It is only positive. I said there are 500 ways to win a football game and today was slightly ugly. Who cares?” Klopp said
As of now, the Reds are two points clear of the defending champions at the league’s table standings.
Liverpool took the lead through Robert Firmino’s glancing header in the 16th-minute of the first half from Andre Robertson’s superb delivery, but Lucas Moura’s strike in the 70th-minute of the second half levelled the game to make it 1-1.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah’s header in the final minute seal the deal after Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris couldn’t hold on to it as the ball came off his hands and bounced to Alderweireld, the nearest defender, towards goal-line.
Toby had the opportunity to save himself and recover the ball however he managed only to stub his toe into the ground and kick at fresh air to notch the contest as the ball rolled in.
On the contrary, the Spurs are still third in the table despite the loss, but their spot is tenuous. Tottenham has lost four of its last five Premier League matches, and Manchester United is level on points with the North Londoners, trailing only on goal differential. What’s more is that their rival Arsenal will play Newcastle at home tomorrow, April 2, and could move up to third.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino didn’t coach the match due to his two-game touchline ban and now they lacked inspiration without the guiding hand of the Argentine, who just watched the game from the stands.
In addition, the Spurs will begin their long-awaited tenure at their new stadium in their next match against Crystal Palace on Thursday, April 4 at 2:45 AM (GMT +8).
“We were unlucky to concede [the winner] because we dominated Liverpool in the second half. We are disappointed but the emotion and feeling will help us.” Pochettino stated
He added: “Now we start from zero and we can achieve what we want. You cannot only judge us on the position in the table but all the circumstances, like playing at Wembley. My players deserve a lot of credit and we have been so competitive over the last few years.”
Meanwhile, Moura was dejected as they failed to take their opportunities to win the football game.
“It is very hard to lose like this. We played very well. At this level of game we cannot make some mistakes and we had chances to win the game,”
