Ligue 1’s In Focus: Monaco

Throwback 2014-2015

Although Monaco dropped to the 3rd spot last season, their performance remains spectacular considering what they have achieved both in the domestic and Champions Leagues.

The Monegasques initially had a slow start. The loss of James Rodriguez to Real Madrid and El Tigre, Radamel Falcao to Manchester United left a hole in their team’s overall depth and form. Wins, which they easily clinched during the 2013-2014 season, were not that easy to achieve. Soon they started to thrive on draws and even fell out of Ligue 1’s top three (3).

But Monaco’s lackluster performance was nothing but temporary. The club rebuilt its confidence and went on an impressive run. From November until the last days of the recently concluded season, Monaco has only lost thrice. They also made some noise in the Champions League when they outlasted Arsenal to further advance in the competition’s latter stage.

Season highlights

Monaco’s series of consecutive wins that started on November, propelled the club back into Ligue 1’s elite.

In addition, outlasting the Premier League powerhouse, Arsenal is quite a feat that is worthy to brag about.

Monaco experienced a thrashing in Bordeaux’s hands during their 2nd match. It was a painful scenario, but Monaco never allowed it to happen again.

Scene Stealers

Defender Layvin Kurzawa’s impressive performance was indeed, crucial to Monaco’s cumbersome battle to the top.

Likewise, it would be too hard to ignore the superb display of Yannick-Ferreira Carrasco, who also  generated six (6) points for the squad.

Ins and Outs

Arsenal is said to be interested in the services of Joao Moutinho. However, reports have yet to confirm the said transfer. What is sure is that ex-AC Milan star, Stephan El Shaarway is on its way to the Monegasque squad. It is also said that the club is keeping its tabs on Chelsea’s Juan Cuadrado.
