Two-time Wimbledon champion Rafael Nadal has been eliminated at Wimbledon after a thrilling four-hour and 48 minute fourth round loss to the world No. 26 Gilles Muller.
Muller won the match in an epic five-set to upset Nadal with a 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 15-13 to reach to a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the second time in his career and the first time since the 2008 US Open.
“Definitely the biggest win of my career, I would say. I had a big elbow injury in 2013 and wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to come back. I’ve played many great matches since then, but this is definitely the biggest victory since I came back. Especially at this stage of a Grand Slam, playing one of the guys who is dominating tennis again this year.” Said Muller
The 34-year-old Luxembourgian cruised through the first two sets but the 15th time Grand Slam champion Nadal fought back from two sets down to put the game in a most intense final set with both players giving their best shot. However, it was Muller who came through to secure the place in the last eight.
After the game, Muller was asked about his victory with Nadal and he’s reaction was: “I’m Tired. It was a long match. Rafa stepped it up and it was a big battle. To be Honest, I haven’t really realized what just happened. It’s a great feeling. I’m just glad it’s over and I’m in the quarterfinals now.” Muller added
As we bring the best free betting tips to you, the surprising defeat extended Nadal’s drought to six years without reaching a quarterfinal at the All England Club. He has not been to the Wimbledon quarterfinals since 2011.
Moving forward, Muller will play against seventh seeded Croatian Marin Cilic in the quarterfinals.
