Catalonia did a great job to claim a 2-1 victory against Venezuela in a friendly match played at Girona’s Montilivi Stadium in Spain.
The first half of the game finished goalless, but they started the second half with a good tempo and turned up the heat in the final 45 minutes of action.
During the 53rd-minute, La Seleccio was able to get the lead after Stoke City forward Bojan Krkic struck the back of the net. However, the Venezuela equalized the score six minutes later through the help of Espanyol right-back Roberto Rosales.
It seems that the game would be going towards a penalty shootout, but Javi Puado scored the winner for the home side in the 88th minute to beat Venezuela to 2-1.
Meanwhile, Catalonia is not recognized by the football governing bodies FIFA or UEFA. Meaning, the triumph was counted for nothing as the match does not have official status.
Meanwhile, Barcelona defender, Gerard Pique, who retored from Spain’s national team after the 2018 World Cup, led the Catalonia and he nearly scored with a curling free kick that struck the crossbar in the first half before being replaced by Riqui Puig in the second half.
In addition, Brighton full-back Martin Montoya and Southampton midfielder Oriol Romeu, as well as Real Betis’ Marc Bartra, also featured for Catalonia. Some Catalan players were missing because clubs didn’t want to release them to avoid being injured in the game.
Prior to this match, Venezuela had beaten Leo Messi’s Argentina, 3-1.
