Tundra Esports beat Team Secret to winThe International 2022
Tundra Esports beat Team Secret 3-0 to lift the Aegis of Champions as they were crowned winners of The International 2022 (TI11), bagging at least $8,486,704 share of the prize pool of over $17m. The International is one of the biggest annual esports world championship tournaments for DOTA 2 esports teams hosted and produced by the game’s developer Valve.
“I want to thank everyone for coming here, supporting us and watching the Grand Final,” Tundra Esports Team Captain, Wu “Sneyking” Jingjun said. We wouldn’t be here without you guys. Shoutout to everyone who has supported us along the way!” The entire DOTA 2 international tournament was held in Singapore, marking the first time the championship was held in Southeast Asia.
Tundra went undefeated throughout the bracket stage, including a win against Team Secret 2-1 in the upper bracket final. They only lost four maps in the group stage and just one on the main stage. During game one of the final round, Tundra dominated Team Secret with Naga Siren-Tusk combo and Michał “Nisha” Jankowski’s impressive Leshrac plays.
Game Two remains dominated by Tundra despite being Team Secret’s better start in the early stages of the game. Tundra secured Game Two after 40 minutes. Game Three saw Team Secret being aggressive, picking up Naga Siren, Ember Spirit and Leshrac as the main lineup. However, Tundra still sealed Game Three after 44 minutes, taking the final 3-0 to become TI champions.
“I am so happy…we did an amazing job throughout this tournament,” said Neta “33” Shapira, who is considered as the MVP of the tournament. “It’s surreal, I’m trying to digest the emotions… it’s crazy!” Oliver “skiter” Lepko added. “It doesn’t feel real, I’m still trying to understand what happened in my mind, I can’t even believe it,” Martin “Saksa” Sazdov said.
The total prize pool for this year was over $17m (USD) and the first prize was $8.5m (USD), which is a huge drop from last year. Team Spirit were the reigning champions of the tournament after winning in Bucharest, taking home $18.2 million of the record total prize pool of $40 million. Team Spirit were knocked out early in the competition and finished 16th after losing to BOOM Esports in the first round.
Before the main event, Valve hosted Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) which consists of three Tours. The DPC’s top 12 teams automatically booked their place for The International, with an additional eight teams joined the championship through regional qualifiers. Regional League tournaments were held in six global regions: Western Europe, Eastern Europe, China, North America, Southeast Asia and South America.
