12BET Football News: El Clasico postponed amid protests

Tension is running high in Barcelona as mass protests are on-going following the arrest of 9 Catalan separatist leaders for their role in the 2017 independence referendum. With the current Catalan situation, The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed that El Clasico or La Liga’s Barcelona and Real Madrid derby set on October 26 will be postponed due to security measures. The Catalan Football Federation suspended all matches in the region, although that decision does not affect La Liga matches or the Spanish national team. A big protest is expected in the city on the day of the match, so La Liga requested that the match venue will be moved from Barcelona’s Camp Nou to Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu.

However, neither the two giants are willing to move the game. “Under normal circumstances we’d play at home. They’re anticipating certain different circumstances and while we know that this week has been out of the ordinary, we are hopeful of playing the game at our ground. That’s what we want to do,” Barca manager Ernesto Valverde.

The new date for the big match has not yet been announced until next week, but it more likely to be a couple of months from now which is sometime in December. A proposed date of December 18 declined by La Liga president Javier Tebas due Copa del Rey fixtures.

I think that if the Copa del Rey is already devalued then putting a Clásico on the day on top of that completely devalues it. It can’t be put on that day, you have to sit down and make a date. I hope that the committee can change the order,” Tebas said.

EL Clasico is a much awaited derby between fierce rivals Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. The rivalry is regarded as one of the biggest in football history and world sports as these two sides are among the richest and most successful football clubs in the world. It is also considered as one of the biggest club football match in the world and is among the most viewed derbies of all time both in Spain and around the globe.

“These games are so highly anticipated that I think the players are ready to play them whenever they are played,” Valverde said. Barcelona will resume their domestic campaign this weekend after the international break by playing on the road to Eibar, while Real Madrid will also travel to Mallorca the same day to defend the top of the Spanish top flight.
